The drawbridge was manned by a widower
who brought his young son by the river.
On its bank, future dreams were shared
By the father who deeply cared.

Dreams for this 8 year olds education,
Fishing, travel and service aspirations,
While ripples enlarged from a pebble cast,
Each hope rippled dreams so vast.

The distant sound of the trains whistle came
Twas time to lower the drawbridge again.
The son asked if he could remain
By the river to watch the crossing train.

As he climbed the hill to the glass enclosure,
Passing the gear shaft, many feet lower,
Positioned, in time to release the lever,
He scanned a vacant bank by the river.

Then uplifted arms in the gear pit, he spied
As the speeding train was growing nigh.
No doubt could enter his mind
Though shivers iced his spine.

Release the lever, he must
Tho his pride and joy would be crushed,
So all the passengers could be saved,
Eyes closed, its release he braved

As the train, o're the closed bridge, sped
Gears in the pit turned red.
Yet, just like every summers day
Not one even looked his way.

From on high, he sobbed,"Don't you even care,
As you yawn and read your newspaper?"
"So you might live, I gave my son!"
"He died to save you....every one!"

Closely related to what Jesus did for us! I do remember you telling this story! Thank Mom, for the reminder!

Sandgrain,  this is a masterfully beautiful and touching poem, you have written. Sad as to the making of crucial decisions at a cost, but beautifully illustrative of the Sacrifical Heavenly Father and the necessary sacrifice he was willing to make for our sake.  A wonderful and thought provoking-tear jerker.  Thank you for this gift, David

you know i've heard this story!  Someone once told me it in a bible study at university.  But even though it impacted me deeply then, reading the story in poetic form (and done so well!) i am just as impacted today. Thanks for sharing this thought-provoker!

Beautiful, beautiful poem. I really liked it. The things in life we take for granted! The difficult task go unappreciated by many who do not take the time to notice, in comparison to the tears God shed as He sent His only begotten Son to die for us, yet some still have not noticed.

What a beautiful poem, I felt as if I were there.  Oh, the things we take for granted, each and everyday....Maybe now I will look a little deeper into the simplest things, thanks for sharing this sandgrain.

I'm so sorry I neglected to say I'm not the originater of the story (heard long ago on the radio), but again thought it was well worth trying to set in verse.
Thank you Denise, Alle'(Sometimes people will get more of an impact from a story, or poem to stir interest, than from all the great wonderful church services), mirjam,
David,(to Christ be the glory), vwood, Wht.Dove (glad you remembered), and ellie.  Imagine our Father not even wrestling with this decision to save us!!  God bless you each.
