Things dead on a soundless road,
going 90 miles an hour
in the wrong direction.
They pointed the arrows here,
these stumbling blocks
these corpses of my past
still coated in His blood,
but I followed them.

(On my left i glimpse
a young woman waist deep
in a murky and turbulent river,
hands resigned to seeking help.)
Passing, I close my eyes.
I am her.

My heart silences on,
this cluttered road upon which I travel;
it's background painted darker;
it's trees beginning to undress.
I've learnt to dodge the obstacles now,
swerve across the sterile stretch
light-less, hope-less, focus-less.
Ceased trying to reverse.

(looking out the window
I watch a girl jump to try and catch
her faith that is caught in the top
branch of a naked tree).
Passing, I close my eyes.
I am her.

Lost on this desolate plain,
I fumble half-heartedly for a map,
but my foot never leaves the accelerater,
and my brake pads are quickly wearing thin.
I plunge deeper into No Man's land,
the windowwipers of my eyes
rusted; exhausted.

(on the side of the road
stands a man clothed in white.
Slowing down, I watch Him read the
"No trespassing" tape flapping in the wind;
long for Him to ignore the warning,
break through the barrier and
drive the body of this tired soul.)
Passing, I close my eyes,
regret.

It is at the fork in the road
that I break down,
petrol-less, lacking even enough energy
to replace the leaking tyre,
renew the warrent of fitness.
And I am mute as He steps over that flapping tape, sets to fixing my brokenness,
settles into the passenger seat,
and directs me down the path that
opens into another morning.

mirjam,
this one is quite erie-like a bad dream of the sinners highway to hell, but for the intervention and help of that Man in White along lifes highway, ready to aid us and guide us through our waking hours.  It is a sobering and challenging piece.  You know how to get our attention-you give us a poem well worth the reading,  Thank you, David

I believe there is many out there that have a walk through their life just like your poem, but we can thank GOD we found the peace maker and giver, We must pray for those so tormented that have not yet come home to their Heavenly Father. Thanks for your work

Wow! I really don't know what to say. This is one strong poem! I think at one time or another we've all followed those wrong signs down the wrong roads of life. And ignored against our better judgement the man in white on the side of the road. For He will not force himself in our life, but waits until we finally reach out for Him. When we're ready to put him in the "drivers" seat of life.  1Tim. 1:20..not just that but so that we may turn our lives around.

Mirjam this just blew me away! Very well done, very strong!

David, thanks for your comments, you know i hadn't written it as meaning to be the highway to hell, but now that you mention it, it could be that too.  I had intended it to be even a path a Christian can take in their heart, away from God, getting lost in the things that hurt them in their past, and ignoring God's outstretched hand of healing.  But your interpretation works even better, thanks for giving me a new perspective on my own poem - i like that!

OWPEMT - (now that i know what it stands for! Thanks) - you're right, when we think of the millions of people walking this road, we do need to pray that they will not bypass the man in white... thanks for reading!.

Janet you're such a sweetie, thanks! And you're most welcome about my comments, you deserve every word and more.

Whtdove - you got it! The title refers to the white flag of surrender.  Only when we surrender ourselves to Him do we give him permission to step over that tape and work in our lives - you're right, he won't force himself into our lives, but waits for us to open our hearts to him.  Thanks for your insight and comments, i always love hearing the wisdom you offer!

Awesome analagies in your piece!  How true in every respect, including fast acceleration even though we see it's the wrong road, assured no one understands our situation.

I can't believe I missed this poem. I'm sure glad I got to see it this time around. This is a wondefully descriptive work depicting what life is really like until we are captured by His love. A lonely and scary highway is life to travel without Jesus behind the wheel. Very inspiring! Ellie

Geez, this is an old one, and here I thought you were back with us again

Reading it again still blew me away. Though lately I feel as I've been traveling this road. A different perspective I got this time around.

God Bless you and I hope to see you around soon!!

Great stretch of imagination and highway of heart. This is a wonderful verse of decision. I'm so glad you made the right one. It seems you certainly would careen off the road completely. We all would without his divine intervention!
Sincerely,
Rwood
