The Scarlet Cord Two spies went out to Jericho, Sent by Joshua, so he'd know The kind of men that dwelt therein. There was harlot, lived in sin, Whose name was Rahab and these two Had hoped she'd hide them, for they knew That though they'd entered secretly, There were so many eyes to see Those who came through the city gate. Into her hands, they put their fate. The king heard strangers were about. He was alarmed, there was no doubt. He sent to Rahab, asking she Produce these men at once, so he, Could quickly see just who they were. She knew their lives must rest with her And so she lied.Said they were gone, But if the guard would hurry on, They'd surely find them near at hand. Then she proceeded as she'd planned. Upon her roof, the men were hid. She came and told them all she did And pled that when the city fell, They would remember her as well And save her family, so they Told her what to do that day. Within her house, all kin must meet. When it was over, they would greet And bring them safely past the war. A scarlet cord, her window bore, Would be a token they would see And so it was this came to be. The men told Joshua all they knew. He marched on Jericho and threw His mightly army at the walls. While trumpeters blew strident calls Around the town, his army passed, Until the seventh day at last, The walls collapsed and people fled, But where he saw that cord of red, No harm was done and Rahab came To dwell where people praised her name! Joyce: I'm glad you liked the poem. It's a bit long but thought I'd go ahead and post it. I should have put the Bible reference in and forgot to do so. It's Joshua, chapters 2 through 6. Thanks for your comments. Betty Lou Hebert |

Wonderful story. Yes, there are many instances in the Bible where women, some looked down on by men as harlots, were God's chosen vessels to cleanse earth of man's evil ways. And I believe that The Spirit of Women is still connected to, and for the most part, serving God. ![]() ((Betty)) -newell Sharing God's Love through perfectlovepoetry.com Copyright: 2002 Newell Elsworth Usher [This message has been edited by Silver Streak (04-28-2002 01:58 PM).] |
