I gaze out on the misty sea
And wonder if I'll ever be
Set free from all this pain I feel
These waves of sadness, chains of steel.

I feel the gray clouds in the sky
Press down upon my heart, I cry,
'Oh, why can't I just see the sun?
My strength is gone...my soul's undone.'

I took my grievance to the Lord
My heart, my soul, in one accord,
'When shall this end...this agony?
My world's in such disharmony.'

He gently took me by the hand
And set my feet on higher land
He touched my eyes so I could see
His purpose through eternity...

'Although this world will break your heart
My loving grace I will impart
So you can see beyond the deed
To look inside, to see the need.'

'And ev'rything in life, you see,
That touches you - must pass through Me
And though you struggle with such pain
I'll work it all for your own gain!'

I gaze out on the misty sea
His waves of kindness cover me
He set my feet on higher land;
He rescued me from sinking sand!

And slight is the sting of his trouble
Whose winnings are less than his worth;
For he who is honest is noble,
Whatever his fortunes or birth.~~~Alice Cary, ~Nobility~

Denise I loved this beyond words!  He set me upon Higher ground is a line we sing in a worship song at church and reminded me of this... Isn't God such a faithful God who never leaves us, who never promised our lives would be without suffering, but promised to be with us throughout those times, and to restore us and lift us up when it gets too much... We always become stronger through our sufferings, and God can use our sufferings to the bennefit of both ourselves and and others.  Well praise the Lord for that huh.  Great read, Denise.

Denise,
  It seems of late that the poems you post do dwell on the pain-- but not only pain--the gain!  I trust you are finding sweet victories in and through the One who Loves you so much--Praise God!
  (P.s. The icon I chose reminded me of you.)

Dear Denise; this is a beautiful, beautiful, poem. Isn't it always amazing how it's out of the depths of our pain that we finally surrender and find His Love? Thank you for sharing your beautiful gift with us on this grace filled site.

this poem is so beautiful, and full of wisdom. It speaks to the pain we all must all experience in our lives, but it also shows how faith will be the healing force to keep us strong. Janet Marie

Thank you, Mirjam, David, Ellie and Janet for reading and for your kind comments. Yes, I believe we are drawn closer to Him and therefore lifted higher through our sufferings. This is another poem that I wrote in the midst of the darkest days of grief and turmoil after my father's passing.

p.s.- David, re the icon: that was me in my youth...hehehehe
