Even a giant such as you, has limits.
Beyond that place you should not have to go.
I promise that we'll never push beyond them.
If you are tired and need to rest, I'll know.

As God so long ago gave me a promise,
If I would plant the crops, he'd help me tend.
He said he'd be right there beside me always.
I'm telling you the same now, trusted friend.

You'll be my faithful, gentle draft horse.
You'll do your part, I have no doubt of that.
And I in turn will feed and take care of you,
With loving you a big part of our pact.

I will not think of you as slave or servant.
I hope that you'll consider me a friend.
We'll work, converse and do the job together
And reap our just rewards at the day's end.

Joyce:  What a wonderful promise this is! So many people have no consideration for the animals in their lives.  It's always so sad to see.

Your poem reads very nice out loud, even with all rhyme set aside.  Just like I'm there talking to my trusted and most honorable friend.  A very nice tribute.  -Bob

Oh Joyce, this is wonderful! May I send a copy to my dad?  He's the finest, most hard-working man I know. He has a good heart, a strong faith, and loves the land. He and mom always take such good care of their animals, (salsa, buddy, barny, etc). He would love this I think.

I've always thought it was the measure of a man how he treated those - human and not - who were bound by love or duty to follow his will. This farmer knew he would get more effort from kind treatment than whipping past endurance - I wish there were more such promises.   Great poem!

this is absolutely wonderful...it is the way a farmer can reap the best from his animal friend

it would be an excellent attitude for bosses to take, wouldn't it

Thanks to all of you and Constance please feel free to send to your Dad.  This is in memory of my own father and how he treated his animals. And also my older brothers who drove teams and the team was always to be cared for before their own needs.  My  menfolk could not abide cruelty to their horses and hired men did not last long if they didn't have the same values.  Joyce

~smiling broadly~  I DO so enjoy stories and poems of friendships and
benevolance among God's creatures.

Thoroughly enjoyable, and warm Joyce.  *s*   SR

Joyce,
This is a wonderful poem, a tribute to your father and your whole family as well, and a wonderful subject for a poem. This one is right from the heart, a true portrayal of man and horse together.
Very beautifully done
