The Light In My Closet
Written by Janie Mathis

My closet light is out! Oh, what am I to do?
For night things now go Bump! And run into my shoe!
I lay in bed afraid, with covers on my head
My eyes by fingers, propped, the dark is what I dread
A shadow at my pane, is peering in at me
A noise in yonder room, whose source I can not see
Oh, please this night to end! Produce a shining face
To chase away my fears, of cowardly disgrace!
Sudden, breaks, a brightness, cracks through my closet door
Radiance so blinding, I couldn’t ask for more
Glowing in its presence, I’m suddenly aware
Shadows at my window, have gone away from there!
I think the sound afar, was just my dog, named Bill
And then I laugh, amused, oh me, I’m such a pill!
Nestle I to slumber, for sleep I surely need
Soon thereafter dreaming, safaris, dark, I lead
And when the morning comes, I open up my eyes
Thankful for the sunlight, that shines from ocean skies
But something I find strange, when I, to trip the switch
When flip it off I can’t, for reasons of a witch?!
For as I lift my eyes, to where the bulb should stay
I find the socket’s bare, to this I say, “No Way!”
But then another light, starts glowing in my mind
Then I know the reason, for globe that I don’t find:
God lives in my closet, t’was He that did look in
The shadow at my pane, was actually just Him!
And now when in the dark, no more to feel dismay
For He’s my closet’s light and runs the dark away!

Janie; Positively delighful! So mich fun to read and with a lovely tribute to God watching over you. Ellie

Summers haunting melody
that awakens
the butterflies,
calling them to join
the dance
in their silent song
of praise to God.

Janie I was delighted to say the least when I read this. A little light dispells the darkness. I love what you've done with this.

It's uplifting, a bit humorous, tender and really touching!

Marcy, Ellie and Whitedove

Thanks for reading and enjoying. This one was a lot of fun. It came upon me unexpectedly while I was driving in my car (as so often is the case)

I just wrote it yesterday and as I read it to my 3 yr old tonight I began envisioning this as a board book. What do you think about that? The only thing is, I can't draw worth a flip. Any would be artists looking to have their work published in a children's board book? Anyone?

Well, I'm no artist, so I can't help you there   This was a lot of fun to read, and certainly could make a great book.  Thanks for the great read

Oh Wow Janie, This would be great in a children's book!!!  As I read it I remembered when I was little and soooooo scared of what was in my closet, what a beautiful way to shine His light and get rid of those boogie men.  Love it!!! Bonnie

Lakewalker, BSC and Marcy,

Thanks for reading, I'm glad you enjoyed. I'm really excited at the prospect of making this a book. I purchased today the 2000 Children's Writer's and Illustrator's Market book today and hope to learn how to "go for this" but Marcy, I'd love some guidance from your friend. You didn't include his website info and I don't know if you have sent me a personal email with this info because I've not been receiving email for a few days, something's wrong it. If you feel comfortable posting your friend's web site info here, please do, other wise send me an email and hopefully I'll be able to get my mail again soon.

Thanks for everyone's encouragement.

Janie
