THE LAST COMMANDMENT

I've often wondered how the world would be,
If we were to honor for just one day...
Even just one of the ten commandments.
Such a thought my words could never portray.

To think of a day where no body lied,
Oh, wouldn't that be a breathe of fresh air.
Or at a brother's hand, no body died,
Joy of such a day I couldn't compare.

A day honoring father and mother,
What peace in soul that would truly reveal.
The day where no man covets his brother,
A day where no man has a cause to steal.

A day where man hold no Gods over Him,
Including the gods of Self and of Greed.
Adultery, not even a conscious whim,
Every spouse meeting each others need.

Take your pick, after all, there's just a few.
Any would suffice a much better day.
Ten Old Testament or one from the New.
That last commandment given us this way;

"Love one another as I have loved you."
Imagine His love in each of us, then,
One day holding that last commandment true...
Wouldn't that bring honor to the first ten?

Wow Michael! Wouldn't it be a different place if they were followed? No murder, no stealing, no lies. Only to imagine!

The 2 commandements given in the NT actually cover all 10 of the OT.
The first, Love God with all your heart and soul. covers the first 5 in the old.
Love thy neighbor as thy self, would cover the last 5.
So actually He didn't give us a new commandment if you think about it. For if we loved God with all heart and soul, we would have already abided by the first 5.
If we love eachother like we should, then we wouldn't break the last 5. Just a thought for you.

I might have that reversed, cause I'm not looking in the Bible right now. But I know God comes first, so I must have it right.

Much wisdom in this piece sir...and beautifully written as yours always are. True, that love would just about cover the rest...love one another as I have loved you...that would mean the world would almost be a perfect place for a day! Wow, what a wonderful thought.....thanks for making us give this some thought. Wish everyone could read this - - I mean Everyone!!

WhtDove,

I understand what you are saying about the two New Testaments commandments. Believe me, I was not overlooking God or His first 5 "Old Testament" commandments in this poem. In order for us to "love one another as God has loved us", (Agope, I believe is the word), we must first embrace God's love for us. In doing this I see the meeting the first five Comandments almost as prerequisite to even possibly honoring the last commandment Jesus gave to us. God does come first, if he doesn't, love never enters the equation to begin with.

Very interesting to see your perspective on this, I think we can both agree the commandments, in general, are like a finely woven garmet, all threads intertwined. The unraveling of one most assuredly leads to the unraveling of all.

Thank you one and all for your comments. Femme, in essance, Love truly does conquer all. That was the point I so dearly tried to express here.

Michael, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that I thought you left something out. I thought this was really well written, and it just made me think of that. That's all.
And your right, without God we don't know Love because God is Love. He is the base of all things. I'm sorry!!!
It was wonderful and made me think that's all I wasn't implying anything!
