IN NINE LONG After your transplant surgery You'll have a N.G. tube up your nose And out of your urinary tract Will extrude a long hose. You'll have a tube in your neck For I.V. solutions to enter And two J.P. drains To drain your new insulin center. You'll sort through the emotions Which continue to loom As your being transported by gurney Back to your room... In Nine Long. Nine Long is a hospital ward Overlooking San Francisco Bay. The windows at night are draped With a fog of vast gray. Busy halls become quiet As recovering patients aspire To reach a deep healing From their professional hire. Each nurse reaches in to touch A part of your soul And before very long You'll be feeling quite whole... In Nine Long. Rejection drugs, infection drugs, And drugs to help you rest. Out of all the drugs, personally, I liked the morphine the best. Have faith, drink plenty of liquids, Educate yourself, get out of your bed, And try your best to remember What the physicians have said. Far beyond all the disciplines, the pain, The anxieties, and the strife; You'll receive the greatest gift of all, You'll receive a new life... In Nine Long. -Robert E. Michaud Jr.- |

Robert, What a bizare and probably acurate picture you paint, But life is precious and we often go to extrodinary measures to cling to it and prolong it. Just one observation, life without purpose is of little value. Great read! Dennis :^) |

I had to giggle at this because I was recently hospitalized and while "I liked the Morphine best" works for you, I had an allergic reaction and anything was better than that! Having faith also worked for me... Sunshine ~~~Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadow. Helen Keller ~~~ |

Dear Bob; I'm more concerned about how you are doing? Are you ok now? Faith is always the answer and I like the way you have put this poetically so well. Ellie Summers haunting melody that awakens the butterflies, calling them to join the dance in their silent song of praise to God. ellie LeJeune |

Bob -In a poetically perfect and humorous way you have shown what this scary experience is like. And, I too hope all is well now. Bonnie |

![]() Marcy: During extended stays in a hospital, humor certainly comes in handy. Dennis: True. Since my release, I have tried to fill my life with purpose. Sunshine: At times, Faith is all we have. Not necesarily faith in a miraculous healing. But, Faith that no matter what happens, God is always present. Ellie and Bonnie: Not to worry, I have been given a new life. Like receiving a spiritual new birth, I have received a physical new birth. Bob <>< |

Bob, I sure read a lot of thankfulness in this. The chance to be whole again. To take the bull by the horns. God is moving in your life and your poetry. May He always continue to do so! |
