Dreams Of Now And Past by © Richard Budig 1996 My time is nearly over. I've come to say good-bye, To drink you in once more Before I lay me down to die. I feel my ending clearly As I travel through the night. The velvet touch of something . . . The hand of darkness holds me tight. Old memories mix and stir And I find myself once again Seeing faces of long ago, And places I once had been. But lately, it is you I see Most often in my dreams. Over and over you come to me And we speak of many things. You are young again With flashes in your hair. Your face is sweet and smooth. The scent of you is on the air. Tonight, you came in somber black, A single tear upon your cheek, And you touched me as before, With hands so gentle and so meek. I do not know what drives me, You murmur without guile. It's a force that lives within, A power that kills my child And I don't know what drives you, You say to me in puzzled wonder, To love me so completely When things I do tear us 'sunder. Hush now, quiet . . . say no more, I reply as night surrenders to dawn. Just stay with me and do not go, For we have dreams yet to spawn No, you answer, I cannot stay For truly, your time is near, And happy I am for both of us That my life's end is also clear. I'll join you soon enough, You say, raising high your glass, Sooner than you know, In your dreams of now and past. |
