Silent Barns

Silent barns and empty silos
stand in testimony to a time that was
and now has been placed
on the front pages of a dusty scrapbook
A time when mailmen on appointed rounds
engaged in split rail conversations
and housewives....were all that the title entails.
Silent barns and empty silos
occupy the landscape of our memories
to guide us down the gravel road
that leads from the busy freeway.

Hey, Robert, I remember when the mail was delivered twice each day! Oh, my Lord, I'm tellin' my age again.Wonder when that was, See I'm even too old to remember, LOL
Yes, I love the picture you painted.

Thank you all very much. I came from the farm. I am first generation not to farm for a living.

I remember those days though.

I'm So. California born and raised... I'm so city-fied that I, not only once but twice mistook a deer in the middle of the road for a large dog! LOL... anyway... great poem here RobertB and I don't even have to really think about the meaning on this one ... but it did make me think of the pictures my mom showed me of the farm she grew up on back in Canada. Talk about being dirt poor... their walls were no more than the black tar paper you see on unstuccoed walls and the cross streets were two dirt roads without names. No thanks! But your poems... well you just keep em' comin'.

I've got one of each....one empty and one silent. This poem hits home. I think many times the author doesn't really know if his poem will really hit home with someone or not. For what it's worth, yours did.

Oh thank you guys very much!! It really means a lot to me that it brought back memories and that it "hit" home. That makes it all worth it. Well....I guess I would keep on writing even if it didn't!!! But that is a nice bonus.
