Hand carved cradle, wooden floor, ...hewn from timbered oak, "Four score and seven years ago," ...Emancipator spoke. At Sumpter's Fort, death's evil sword, ...slashed the state in twain, Shearing through the bond's of man, ...as had the brother Cain. Two brothers born on cabin floor, ...shared cradle and a name, Yankee Doodle, Johnny Reb, ...were not they one the same. Mini-balls and sabre's thrust, ...a charge up Picket's Hill, In fading light of evening's mist, ...Cain did his brother kill. The flower of a nation, ...touched by Reaper's hand, Yankee Doodle went to town, ...Look away, Dixieland. [This message has been edited by Mike (edited 11-10-1999).] |

Great poem, Mike. I like the way you brought out the perspective of brother against brother in terms of Cain and Abel. On a braoder scale, aren't all wars like that? |

Mike, this is awesome. I relive the events through your words. The thin red line of blood was spilled, when brothers fought at Picket's Hill. The valley floors now covered red, with blood from Yankee Doodle and Johnny Reb. Valleys flooded now with a mother's tears ... When war rears it's ugly head all we have left are the dead. ------------------ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |

Thank you all for the very gracious comments. Sitting here a little reflecting on veterans day. We now have a generation who have such a different perspective on war; who think wars are fought with no casualties or suffering on our part. May they never have to live through a real war. |
