The Romans had a formula For national consensus. We call it "bread and circuses." They called it "panem et circenses." Let's not hastily commence To ridicule the Roman rabble For being corrupted by cheap food, Spectacle and mindless babble. Unless we've been infected with Chauvinistic euphoria By TV talk shows, tabloid News and hamburger emporia, We should see very clearly That a vile conspiracy Has adopted Roman methods To induce public apathy. As politicians have their way And faithfully collect their perks, We should recall what Romans knew: Panem et circenses works. |
