Just an Old Habit

Shall I shed more tears
Thought I used them up over the years
I felt the need so strongly today
When my old love was a foot away

To embrace
To kiss her face
Press her body to mine
Fell her fingertips tickle my spine

But I can predict without fail
Like pinching a cat's tail
The claws would have come unsheathed
Only scratches would I have received

My old heart plays tricks with me
Was not love, only old habit you see
My love was a shallow thing
So easily was made to take wing

I remember vaguely its flights
Through a thousand sleepless nights
Was not hard to close that door
I just don't care anymore

Sometimes what we thought was love was just habit or convenience, not the lasting love that satisfies the soul. Great poem, Tom.

Wow!...Words from the heart here...Wish I could offer words of magic but hugs are a lot easier..

HUGS

Don't ask me where I'm going, just listen when I'm gone and far away you'll hear me singing softly to the dawn.
