The Drums Roll on roll the drums begun, Rumbling with the crack of guns. Soft bugles laid them away, Forever in peace my sons. Now they lie beneath the snow, Where the used up soldiers go And I lay a small bouquet, Against one cross of a row. I would give my silver thread, My dear life for them instead, But their clay and dust will stay, Buried with the honored dead. My heart cries out, ceaseless sighs And endless tears blur my eyes And the ache will not away, Till clay with clay, jointly lies. |
