Written after a hike through the mountains of
West Java a long time ago.

MONSOON RAIN

When finally the cool, dark night had fallen,
there were no sounds of drum or bamboo flute,
nor of the restless, stealthy stirring
of prowling killers and their prey.

And I was just another one of them
that barely breathed, just waiting,
in silent, anxious apprehension,
for fate to start its cruel play.

But then, a distant rumble, getting closer,
a hissing threat, as monsoon rain
hit smouldering mountain flanks
scorched by primeval fire.

A brutal gale tore through the sleepy trees,
awakening their shivering, shrinking leaves
with myriads of icey rain drops, as lethal
as strafing bullets, and as merciless...

And nowhere could we hide from nature's fury,
the blinding flashes, deafening thunder,
the clouds turned into raging torrents,
the awesome wedding feast of earth and sky!

We have monsoon rain here in the southwest, but I've never looked at it this way! Excellent!

Thank you for your kind commentary, friends!
This poem is one of my own favorites, because
I just can't help being overwhelmed by the
beauty of God's creation in so many places
I've lived and worked at, or even just seen
during a brief visit. And I want to include
the many nice people of every race, religion,
culture and language I've been privileged to
communicate with. This is a great world!
