Delicate leaves, now brown with age
Fall silently from their lofty height,
And Fall turns like a books' page
As Summer fades from our sight.
I look for your smile in Autumn's leaves
Falling, turning in the wind,
And pause a while to feel the breeze
As they drift off round the bend.
The leaves find the river in its slowing flow
And float upon the water, drifting
Round and round and to and fro
Dancing gracefully before sinking.
I watch their dance and there it is
The smile I've been searching for
Even in death they dance like this
Swirling with passion at death's door.
It is as though you've returned this year
To grace me with your smile,
And even though I know your gone
I can pretend for a while...

I can pretend and watch the dancing leaves.

Excellent imagery, Robert. I can see the dead leaves falling, being blown into the water, drifting and then sinking, signalling the end of an era, one which will begin anew in the warmth of Spring...ah, the cycles of life.

Beautiful, Robert. Yes, they are beautiful even in the face of death. I loved the imagery in this and the message. And I am a strong believer in pretending...at least for now. I couldn't have expressed my feelings any better than you have here. Thank you.

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous - can't say it enough. So evocative. I love 'The leaves find the river in its slowing flow'. Well done.

RS, this was an awesome poem. I like the comparison of the fallen, dancing leaves to the person who has gone...beautiful.

Thanks again all...this poem is actually about my dad. I had a chance to use metaphor here moreso than in "To the Cabinetmaker". Nature was his favorite thing and he loved the Autumn colors.

I know I'm just echoing everyone else, but i had to put my oar in and repeat 'wonderful' & 'lovely' again. Am waiting for more.

Amazing how melancholy, but beautiful, Fall really becomes when seen through your eyes...

Thanks again everyone. You don't know how much value you give to my poetry. It really has no deeper meaning than when my friends read it and comment.

Ah gees Robert, this is breathtaking....I too, think Balladeer said it best, (he is so darn good with words!) and I knew it was for your father as soon as I started reading it! It is absolutely exquisite, you certainly have done him proud by writing something so beautiful with him in mind...I too, love the colors of fall, and the way they finally turn loose and dance and sway before touching the ground......what beautiful imagery here. I could actually see them falling as you wrote....Thank you for sharing something so personal with us...

Well, it seems all the best adjectives have been used. This was so lovely....a grand tribute to your father.
A poem that you can see, hear, smell or feel is the best poem of all. You've got that here. Wonderful.
