Cold The Winds Did Blow ~Marge Tindal~ 1999 Cold the winds did blow on the Trail Of Tears. The tears froze on the faces of the ones I hold so dear. Across the plains herded cold, hungry and wet. Cruelty awaiting the slowing of their step. From the homes that they had known to a land so far away, a sad remembrance to our heritage today. How could the men who led this nation have possibly understood? How could they have dictated that this journey be withstood? Thoughtless men with hearts of stone sent the Cherokee on their way ... to a death they surely knew was coming along the Trail Of Tears that day. If this is the heart of America then, please, spare me the applause, for the leaders of the country who my peoples demise they did cause. Write the history books and do not change the facts. You can't undo the Trail Of Tears ... you can't bring my ancestors back. You can give them back the land you took from them in shame. You can cry out your atonement but you can't undo the shame. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *For Elizabeth ... and for my heritage. ------------------ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |

Elizabeth - You've many miles to walk with this friend upon The Trail. I know that you will hear the Cherokee as they wail. Your heart will surely break but I'll be here to share the tears, when you see the torment wrought that lingers through the years. Thank you, my friend ... for beginning the longest walk of my life, hand in hand with me. ------------------ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |

Thank you Pepper. If I do nothing else with my heritage poetry ... I hope it serves to simply remind us all of what terror was wrought to cause the tears and what peace lies ahead. ------------------ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |
