Edmund Clerihew Bentley (1875-1956) is remembered mainly for his classic detective story Trent's Last Case and for the humorous verse form that was named after him - the clerihew. It was at the age of sixteen, while he was at St. Paul's School in London, that Bentley first started writing clerihews, as a diversion from school work. G. K. Chesterton, Bentley's life-long friend, was at St. Paul's at the same time, and he too wrote clerihews.

What is a clerihew?  Very simple..

    * It is biographical and usually whimsical, showing the subject from an unusual point of view; it pokes fun at mostly famous people
    * It has four lines of irregular length (for comic effect); the third and fourth lines are usually longer than the first two
    * The rhyme structure is AABB; the subject matter and wording are often humorously contrived in order to achieve a rhyme
    * The first line consists solely (or almost solely) of the subject's name.

Now that you know all you need to know about clerihews, write me some!   They can be of famous people, present or past, movie stars, athletes or anyone you feel the readers would be able to identify. Just to be on the safe side, let's keep current political figures out of it!

Here's one of mine...

Poor Henry Morton Stanley
Will not be remembered as manly.
His fame, as you may have assumed,
Is only for what he presumed.

Believe me, these suckers are NOT easy!  Have fun.....

sorry to tell you jenn jenn
the bubble head is at it again
though her lightbulb is dim her hair’s bright with static
as she pulls silly clerihews from her empty attic

Too wordy?

No political figures, Balladeer? Sigh~
But we could have had left wing/right wing dueling clerihews.

Yep, a bit too wordy. The first line should basically just be the name and maybe an adjective thrown in. The piece should poke a little fun at the subject in a clever way.

Nope, like i said, it's a bi-partisan forum. The dueling clerihews would be for the Alley

Okay, I am gonna poke fun at my hero!

It’s long distance dog race wins that he hogs
Twice in the same year, he has won the Iditarod and the Quest
Some say his over-sized ego places Lance above the rest!

I am wordy, wordy, wordy and that is why it took so many words to say that I am wordy!

Don't worry about it, Alison, being wordy is part of our feminine charm.

Last try for tonight:

Pop star Madonna
will soon be a gonna
when fifty candles on her cake
melt the plastic in her shimmy and shake.

Alison, I think you did a rod before writing that one! I LIKE it

Jenn, now you have it! The celebrity, the humor, the word-bending...it has it all (and not that wordy )

Balladeer is a bit queer*
He teaches poets with a ruler and fear!
No matter how many little ditties that they compose and write
Balladeer's dancing feet and meter makes them quite uptight!

(*'Queer' as in 'odd')

When you have time, oh wonderful and magnificent teacher, could you check out my Ptarmigan poem again, please?

With his music made claxon,
With his conterversies made news,

I hope this one isn't too political...
