OK, folks, if you are planning to participate and you haven't read the post "Personification Workshop" yet, please do so (unless, of course, you already feel that you are an expert on personification, in which case my question would be WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!? LOL) Since everyone seemed to be in agreement about the fact that we really need more discusssion/analysis as a part of these workshops, I thought I would assign a particular topic to be personified by each of you so that we wouldn't be in essence comparing apples to oranges. Easier to discuss what was effective or ineffective, as the case may be, when you are all talking the same language (or about the same thing in different language, as you like it). So, the concept which you are hereby requested to personify is .... (drumroll) LOVE! (my personal favorite, of course ) OK, that's the bad news. Good news is, you can take whatever aspect of or angle on love you'd prefer -- happy-happy-joy-joy love, unrequited love, love lost, bitter love, parental love -- you name it. Um -- but, do me a favor -- keep the adult stuff out of it: not everybody that signed up goes in there! Have fun folks, and remember, my mailbox and Nan's are always open for questions/comments day and night! (mine mostly at night and hers mostly during the day!) --Kess (le joyeux aliene) You cannot choose the way of your death, but the path you choose will determine its own end. |

Kess Wasn't sure which thread to post this under, hope you get to it. This is where Jim gets to pin the pedantic label once again ~smile~ .. I did a little reading on this subject with the sole object of finding something to chuck at you to delay my actually having to think about writing something creative .. lol. Anyway I came up with “anthropomorphism”. My book tells me that anthropomorphism and personification are often confused, and having read about them for 10 minutes I can quite see why. The question to you is: Are we really concerned in this workshop with the (to me subtle) distinction between the two, or can we write in the third person without fear of some clever d*** (and at this point a certain JB from my “home” forum springs to mind ..lol) jumping up and waving his extensive library in our faces and crying “foul”. My understanding is that Personification occurs when a poem addresses an inanimate or abstract object as if it were a person .. Whereas Anthropomorphism endows non-human objects with human physical and emotional qualities .. And the distinction seemed to me to be quite fine until I realised that personification tends to use the second person ie (you, thou), while anthropomorphism favours the third (he,she, it and they) ..... at least that’s what my book says .. lol. So what do you reckon .. are we dealing with Personification or Anthropomorphism or both coz it doesn’t matter .. or am I just being “my usual pedantic self” .. and wasting time writing this when I could have easily written the poem by now........lol? FOUL! FOUL! Actually, perhaps the thing to do here is to broaden our topic to include anthropomorphism. That way you won't draw the unwanted, book waiving attention of whoever Philip is referring to as that "certain JB from" his "home Forum", whoever that is. Who are you talking about. Philip? Point to Phillip ... Actually, I have grown so accustomed to treating them both the same (as I use them interchangably in much of my work), that I forgot to draw that distinction. I think, for the purposes of this workshop, both should be allowable, so that you have the freedom to both "address" the object and describe it (third person). Usually what I do anyway ... Thanks for bringing it up, Phillip -- and no, I don't mind at all. Glad to have an eager contributor and a studious poet ... --Kess You cannot choose the way of your death, but the path you choose will determine its own end. |

Sorry Kess, it seems I'm not into the "love" feeling lately, but I hope "the love for life" will do too. Althought it might be a little "dark". And uh....I'm not sure if I understand completely what's expected of me, so go ahead and tear me apart. |
