"Consonance is a stylistic device, often used in poetry characterized by the repetition of two or more consonants using different vowels, for example, the "i" and "a" followed by the "tter" sound in "pitter patter." It repeats the consonant sounds but not vowel sounds. This is not to be confused with Assonance. Assonance is the repetition of only vowel sounds. Alliteration differs from consonance insofar as alliteration requires the repeated consonant sound to be at the beginning of each word, where in consonance it is anywhere within the word, although often at the end. In half rhyme, the terminal consonant sound is repeated. A special species of consonance is using a series of sibilant sounds (/s/ and /sh/ for example); this is sometimes known simply as sibilance.

Several examples of sibilance come from Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" For example: "And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain" (note that this example also contains assonance around the "ur" sound). Another example of consonance is the word 'sibilance' itself. However, not to be confused with assonance. Further examples can be found in modern Hip-hop music, for example in the song Zealots by the popular group the Fugees: 'Rap rejects my tape deck, ejects projectile/Whether jew or gentile I rank top percentile.'

It is also necessary to identify and recognize the difference between alliteration and consonance. Consonance is the repetition of consonant sounds within the words, while alliteration is the repetition of beginning consonant sounds. They are similar, but produce a different effect, and are interpreted into two completely different things in poetic analysis. For example, the sentence "Few flocked to the fight" is considered to display alliteration, because the only repetition occurs in the "f" sounds at the beginnings of the words. On the other hand, "All mammals named Sam are clammy" shows consonance, as the repeating consonant sound "m" is found within the word."

Alliteration, assonance and consonance are three tools to make your poem stand out. Many times when one reads a poem that strikes them the right way but they can't say how, the poet has used one of more of these techniques in the construction.

Dr. Moose and Alison have performed the assonance and alliteration techniques and now move on to consonance. For the others, please do the first two and then join them..

’Deer darling man, now that is excellent  elucidation, and makes the point in a clear and precise example. Can I choose you as my Professor next term please? I swear you’d be at least 100% better that the one I had this term. She really wasn’t the most inspiring people you could ever meet. Since we are concentrating on the construction of poetic forms next term I could definitely do with some of your clarity of thinking.

Take care

Okay, I am gonna do this one today.  I was just further inspired by the one who writes as Extremist on the main board.  That young poet has this style down flat.

Angel,

You do it well.  You have talent and ought to consider coming on in and taking some lessons.  It's fun and I am learning a lot - bet you would too.

He's good on this Consonance thing, huh.  I am thinking of hiring him to write mine - is that legal?  Angel could be my ghost writer.  Okay, okay.  I am thinking - and I am gonna post something soon.

Soon, I say.  Do I get credit maybe -- here's a thought.  I brought Angel in so I get extra credit and can skip over this assignment?  Is that a plan?  Maybe?  Huh?

Do I hear you muttering to use my creative thoughts on the assignment and stop trying to negotiate?

Thought so.

Consonance. . .

Explosive intensity spews out of my pen
so count to ten and relive this pain again
and only thenwill you feel the pain inside
that hides in the darkness and blankly resides
in my insides, and I begin to fall and my skin dries
crumples up and dies, and I turn into a walking skeleton
and the millions of cuts on my soul turns into billions
then multiplies by a trillion, which is unknown to the opinion
of the people who live inside a condominium.
While my heart pumps uranium and it constantly flows
poisoning my blood, and nobody even knows
what the hell is wrong with me, and what will be my correction
while people have an erection for my ultimate dissection
also these expectationsI have to deal with constantly
and the daily pain I endure, honestly
I'm through living a life I can't control.

Excellent, Angel. This poem would make one heck of a good rap or hip-hop oral presentation. You may want to consider recording some of these and putting them on the 'net.
