Fairy Tales

She dreamed of castles and knights
and filled her head with fairytales;
wishing all her dreams would come true.
He spoke of love and faith
as he worked his way into her heart
and wrote her life with his words.

She read his tender words
of dragons and noble knights
and opened up her hardened heart.
He listened to her fairytales
and rebuilt her shattered faith
by proving that his love was true.

It was hard for her to imagine love so true,
but she found safety and comfort in his words
and little by little, she rebuilt her faith.
He told her that he’d be her knight
and reality could be better than fairytales
if only she would give him her heart.

So she offered up her fragile heart
to him in a love that was true
and together, they believed in fairytales.
He wrote of love, in many words,
and fought her fears with the courage of a knight
and never once betrayed her faith.

She learned the difference between faith
and trust that comes from the heart.
Soon, he realized being a knight
meant not only being brave, but also true;
and that anyone can say the words,
but not everyone believes in fairytales.

So they created their own fairytales
based on true love and faith.
They learned not only to say the words,
but to say, and mean, them from their heart.
They learned together that dreams come true
for ordinary people and not just princesses and knights.

He may not fight dragons, but he speaks her life in his words, and he’s her knight.
She may not be a princess, but she knows all about faith and her heart is true.
And sometimes, fairytales are all just a matter of what we feel in our heart.

"I am nothing special, of this I am sure. I am a common man with common thoughts and I've led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten, but I've loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me , this has always been enough." ~Nicholas Sparks from The Notebook

Ruth, this is a wonderful story as much as it is a well done sestina.  You've captured the essense of fairytales, for certain.  I betcha you are a Princess Bride fan (just a hunch).

Ruth

I'd like to be able to claim that you wrote this with help from my "under the table notes"   but as Nan was watching to closely we never got to do it .... yet  .

Seriously, it is a very beautiful and moving "story" ... quite brought back my Arthurian fantasies (no Jim I am not telling !!).  I'd love to be able to make some deep critical statement about the technique or form but i'm too new to this .. so you'll just have to be satisfied with "I loved it" ...

**sigh**

How lovely, Ruth -- and well done.  You have brought a rare delight to the little girl that hides inside my heart.

Geesh I hate this flu stuff... It's a nasty one - I'm not getting anything done on schedule... Sure glad I extended this workshop....

I really do enjoy the theme on this one - You've done a wonderful job developing it.  Working a theme properly through 39 lines is no small chore (and these guys want us to do 150?).

You haven't deviated on the rhyme scheme - as you did a bit on meter... That, of course, is your choice as the author... All in all - this is a simply wonderful work - and yeah - I believe in fairy tales... and prince charming and the knight in shining armor and all that good stuff.... Nice job, my friend... and Thanks for the "goodies"... I loved them......
