They never said, when I was born, There were no rules to life. They never said that everybody's boot Concealed a knife. No one told me, either, that our Sure and sizzling sun Would fade to blistered blackness Before anybody'd won. They never said the points meant nothing When the game was through And the only resting moment's In a 6 by 2 by 2. No one knows who wrote the game-- But it was here before us. We're free to shake our fists as all The spectators ignore us. Whose cruel idea to start this game-- To deal these cursed hands? Why won't he rise and own his work, That man up in the stands? All they said was, "Son, play hard, It's the best thing you can do." They never told me why, though. I guess they never knew. Every word was once a poem ~ Emerson |
