*Another translation of V.Vysotsky I’ve been drinking ‘cause I’ve been feeling lonely And I’ve been hearing someone’s voice at night I’ve heard my name, some man was calling me I looked behind me, a demon—“what a sight!” He was blinking and making dumb faces,-- So I told him in a couple of phrases: “Brother, I’ve been drinking cognac just like that But, you, I’m sure, drink only methylated spirits Listen, Satan-demon-devil-villain-fiend-you evil cat, Sit beside me—I’ll be very pleased, my dearest, Oh I’ll be damned! You seem so scared and lost Get off my shoulder, or I’ll make a cross!” Demon said that he is friends with Mr. Red He’s my building manager, an alcoholic -- Demon only stuffed his cheeks with bread And quickly drank my cognac in a frolic “Do not worry if it ends, we’ll get some more It’s just another visit to the store!” I fell asleep, he traveled to the store alone Woke up—he’s here, I’m in confusion Either, once more he came into my home Or maybe, this time, I am his illusion He cursed a lot, he screamed and wailed Then tried to kiss me, wiggling his tail I only laughed at him until it hurt my lungs Then asked: “Dear demon, in the underworld, How do you treat the alcoholics and the drunks, You cook them on pure oil? so I’m told... He cursed under his breath, then uttered “Yes, even there, the ruler is coldhearted!” All ended, it got brighter in my place I tried to offer him another drink But he was gone; dissolved in space... Now I await him!--but do not think That I’m insane and weak in health It’s better with a demon, than oneself |

I hope if you drink in life that you are able to stop! Read my poem, Waisting your Life, it might help. [This message has been edited by Laura Mitchell (edited 11-07-1999).] |
