December 29th 1999 two of my dear friends we killed in a car reck. Jessica was the closest to me. She loved smiley faces. I am still healing for the loss of this dear girl and my poetry is my escap.. so I wrote her this.

The day you died
the smiley faces cried

Tears rolled down their cheeks
continuing for weeks and weeks.

None of them will have a real smile
for a long long while.

The day you died
the smiley faces cried

They have no joy to spread
since the day they found out you were dead.

You were taken at just sweet sixteen.
Smiley faces find this cruel and mean.

The day you died
smiley faces cried.

They all question why.
and they continue to cry and cry.

That night in December
is a night all smiley faces will remeber.

Because the night you died
ALL the smiley faces cried.

dear melbear,
i read all of your poems, but this is by far the best.  many of the others had some serious poetical problems with them that i felt detracted from the piece.  also, i tend not to respond to more than one poem when someone has posted so many at one time, i feel that it's unfair to the other poets that only post one at a time.  anyway, this poem is well-written and based upon a rather intriguing concept.  i like the last two stanzas the best of all of them. i think it gets your point across well    i'm sure your friend would have been honored to have such a memorial composed in her honor.

sincerely,
the beautiful freak

I am so sorry for your loss...
This is a beautiful poem tho, very touching. I think it really got the point across because you used something that most people would consider childish -smiley faces- to talk about something so serious as death. You did a very good job with it, and once again, I am sorry for your loss.

I just wanted to thank all of you that resonded to my poem.... It is a piece of my heart. I miss my friend every day. April the reason I used the smiley faces (1)Because My dear Jessica Loved them. (2) Because of the fact that they are childish and silly and we all were intill we lost our Jessica. It made us all grow up. I can never look at a smiley face the same way...because I will always see the tears on their cheeks that no one else can see. They are crying tears for Jessica.
Thanks again to all those the responded and all those that do after this entery!

Mel,
I'm sorry than things turned out this way. Ironically my childhood friend Bill died in a wreck Saturday nite. Being childish and stupid. It hurts so bad, seeing him laying there cold and dead. I can't stop crying. Thanks for the poem.

not their true situation at all."

It's not the angry words that break the heart, it's the silence.

I've seen both and yet in my darkest hours, tend to believe that neither exits.

So many young people killed in automobile accidents each year.  Every one a tragedy and a loss that robbs the world of their talent and beauty as a person.
So sorry about Jessica.  Sixteen is so young.
Nice tribute to her.
