California! Yeah! Okay, I'm done now

Tossing, turning, endlessly waking deep in sweat
        Closing eyes in bitter waste
Breathing harshly as if it would be the last
Aching all over like needles stuck beneath skin
The pin is pressing deeper into the pain, needle-sharp
        Knowing what to do
Letting blood drip away like tears
Shuddering tremors that stir the soul's murmuring helplessness
The moon is too bright, too full, too lonely
And the stars are so far away
Utterly at a loss, confusion surfacing from its cage
The blankets never warm inside deep
The wind never numbs the ache buried
        What is happening?

Sipping at the air in baby caresses
What's happened to the right?
Why does everything seem so wrong?
There is nothing left to explain
Nothing penetrates this stupor fallen to
Nothing to help or hurt this weakened state
Nothing seen or heard to distract the drain
O what wrecks the safety once known so well?

Closing eyes, shrinking away from the light
Creeping away to stalk among the shadows
        There and yet not
        Watching and not participating
        Healer and hurting
O what irony is this feeling tearing apart the heart?
Why must this burning feel like a blue fire made of ice?
That's slowly taking over the things that had been felt
        Love drifting
        Friendships breaking
        Feelings beyond grasp
And leaving nothing but a hateful emptiness
        An abyss not possibly filled
A confusion to leave want and need unexplained
To be alone and yet not, but lonely

What's happened to what was known so well?
Where has that comfort flown to?
Suddenly there is nothing there to tell
Only aching memories that haunt
Looking inside, the world collapses
And there could be only an answer to that ache
That left more questions
What had been there before, as feared,
Was suddenly missing

"Sometimes stars can only be seen in darkness."

"Sorrow's crown of sorrow is remembering happier things."
