Please listen one and listen all, Another tale to you enthrall, But this time I am much older, I am eight and so much bolder. I'll make my break in light of day, Just ask my Mom, can I go play? But first things first, I eat a snack, Then out the door, I don't look back. My plan's afoot and so I am, I haven't wings, I cannot fly, I'd ride my bike, but tire is flat, Hope I avoid, that gol' durn cat. Into the world, I must explore, On down the block, then hear a door, "Come in now Mike," my mother calls, Upon deaf ears her pleading falls. I start to run, I make my break, Adventure's thirst, I'll surely slake, And then I reach the avenue, Is a problem, I'd not thought through. I turn around, to home I slink, Boy was I dumb, I did not think, Into the house, in sad defeat, For I'd forgot, can't cross the street. The Lion Please listen one and listen all, An epic tale as I recall, To weak of heart I bid adieu, As I commence my ode to you. When I was six, or maybe younger, Deep down inside, I felt a hunger, To see the world, to set my sail, As to my quest, I would not fail. I planned escape at dawn's first light, For still afraid the dark of night, With stealth I crept by parent's door, I jumped in fear, was just Dad's snore. On down the hall to living room, I did not know what terrors loom, I crouched in fear, TICK TOCK TICK TOCK, I sighed relief, just mantle's clock. Then in search of bread and jelly, I could not leave on empty belly, O' would it cease, this hunger stop? I could not reach the counter top. My plan awry, I forged ahead, No turning back, once left my bed, With firm resolve, I left the house, As quiet as a churchyard mouse. Across the lawn, to fence out back, Prepared to face unknown attack, What evils lurked? I must beware, Behind the shed, in jungle there. Amidst the leaves, I heard a sound, It was a lion! My heart did pound. With razor teeth and claws of steel, A certain death, what pain I'd feel. What could I do? I had no gun, My only course, turn tail and run, Back in the house and down the hall, With panting breath in bed did fall. Then down the hall, I heard a door, Was Mom and Dad, they slept no more, I heard Mom say, "Now what was that?" "Oh, back doors open, was just the cat." My ode is over, and I must go, My tale of danger, my tale of woe, It is finished, the lesson heed, To all of you, goodbye, Godspeed. [This message has been edited by Mike (edited 10-15-1999).] |

I enjoyed this story or memory. How brave you were with little feet, silently creeping to the street to find there was no crossing guard just mom's last words, "don't leave the yard." |

All of my friends and both of my siblings tried to run away from home... I never did. It wasn't contentment (my mother helped the others pack! LOL)... just the knowledge that I lived a long way from anywhere! LOL. But I still appreciate the tales... well done! |
