The Open Spaces Great Grandmother was too weak and frail to lift the busy toddler to hold her in her lap. So she sat quietly observing the antics of the child. Disappointed in her ability, there was an empty space between her arms that wanted to nurture and console the bumps from the little girls falls. But the child was not constrained by any knowledge of disability. And quickly noticed the old woman's presence. Quiet tears fell down the old wrinkled cheeks when the child crawled over to her and reached up, presenting an open space between her arms that she wanted the woman to fill. A tragedy was averted for both the young and old. When Daddy saw them reach for one another. He lifted up the child and placed her on the old lap. And all the open spaces were filled with love. |
