Motherhood in the singular sense

When night descends
on this haven,
with its children fed
only half the love they need,
the dwelling is silent
except for their small shallow breathing
and their single mother
who wallows with insomnia
feeling the fluid
of loneliness
coursing through her veins
then seep into capillaries
numbing the extremities
of her soul
drawing comfort only
in knowing
that she has escaped
the one greater loneliness…
being married to the wrong man.
