Widow Women

Big houses in little towns
stand stately on side streets lined
with Elms that somehow
escaped the disease which felled
the rest of their species.
Large homes in small towns
sit securely on lots
with dormers marking
the solstice of an era
as time passed over
the Tropic of Progress
leaving widows with arthritic fingers
to make tidy beds
and wish to reach
cob-webbed corners of ceilings.
