I wrote some lines down one time, Added rhythym, meter, some rhyme Made a poem that I considered to be quite good. I took it to a local reading Received some praise (that I'd been needing) And acted quite demure, the way great poets should. Shortly thereafter I sought places Where I recognized no faces And, once again, my one creation I outpoured. Oh, what a difference to a man makes Kindly smiles and pats and handshakes And the feeling one's respected and adored. But now my secret's out And I'm to blame. Oh, how I feel the shame! For I'm a........... One trick pony A literary phony! That one poem is the only thing I've made. Though I think it would be terrific To be creative and prolific, That one poem is my only stock and trade! Sure, I have tried to write another, Even prayed to Virgin Mother Begged to God to take my pen and make words flow. But, like the squid, who gives birth one time, I gave birth to naught but one rhyme.. That one rhyme the only offspring I will know. I still do go around to meetings, Though, deep inside, I feel I'm cheating And, time again, my recitation is the same. Though by now everyone has heard it, I have no other way to word it So, once again, I come with that same tired refrain. And, when they see me come, I hear them say "Look who's here today! It's that same.... One trick pony. That literary phony. We're gonna to hear that same tired poem once more!" And, before I can say the first words, I hear mumblings and cursewords And my ego takes a nose dive to the floor! I guess I'll have to stop pretending That I haven't reached the ending.. I'll take my cue and lay my pencil down. And, if someone asks me sometime If I have ever written some rhyme, I'll just smile and say, "No, I just horsed around!" |

This was a chuckle -- you had some clever lines in here, but my favorite by far was: "I gave birth to naught but one rhyme" Congratulations, this was well done indeed. --Kess ------------------ You cannot choose the way of your death, but the path you choose will determine its own end. |

Needless to say this is not about you!! Another good one Balladeer... and I wonder if there are really people out there like that. Or do you think those with only one rhyme never really tried for a second? |

Loved it! Paul Simon would be proud you shared a title with him.... that's one of my favorite albums, btw (of the same title)... As usual, your rhythm and meter are perfect. Cute story, too. |
