For I’m the jester, or the fool
Who, others entertain-
They only see the painted smile-
And always miss the pain.

They see the folly and the jest-
And laugh at every jibe,
And miss the canker and the ire
Behind each diatribe.

Sometimes it seems that humor
Can be used to conceal-
Those tender inner feelings
We’d rather not reveal.

I found that laughter often comes
Diversion to provide-
And he who talks and laughs the most
Has something he would hide.

We play our part, then take a bow
Emotions have the rule.
With every clown and jester who...
Life’s chose to play the fool.
