The wind shakes
a spreading Eucalyptus tree
and like a wet dog
it splatters drops
across the ally.

The sky is thunderous,
a dark and moving thing
stealing light from day,
callously pushing.

Unsure of direction
seagulls circle whitely
looking for a hiding place.
Where will they go
in the avalanche of hail
that blasts the yard
and jumps from the grass?
Can they hide in trees
that bend and sway,
or under leaves
torn and helter-skelter
falling?

This is a
"Dorothy, where is Toto" day.
A freight train of a tornado
could pluck the feathers
from a seagull and send them
piercing into a telephone pole.

But, since the blossoms
still cling gamely
to the plum tree,
I wonder at the wonder
of small defenseless things.
I think seagulls, unlike me,
are used to weathering storms.

Martie....the imagery in this one is wonderful. What I really enjoyed more than anything is the way you summed everything off with the final two lines....great ending to a great poem
