The Autograph Book Deep wine velvet shields your pages, your shape is cut in diamond edge, the old velvet softly shimmers sitting on a lone shelf’s ledge. The first page is shiny vellum softly glistening, a gentle gleam of old world softness, peaceful light and within it holds some dreams. Now young folk, come with me and take a retreat to then for we’re going back some hundred years to visit some strangers and kin. “October 20, 1880” a young man boldly wrote, “To Mrs. Maggie Oberer,” and here I start to quote: “Many Men of Many Mind Many Birds of Many Kind, Many Fishes in the Sea, Many Men that Don’t Agree.” His penmanship is masterful, his mind has set the prose, you can see just from his words he speaks of what he knows. Cousins were good friends then the kind that could remember when you were good, or you were bad, for one be happy, the other sad. In 1895 from one cousin to another had this touching line to write and by its stroke, so complete, he kept it nice and light: “When years and months have glided by, and on this page you cast your eye, remember ‘twas a friend sincere, that left this kind remembrance here.” Philosophy would spring replete with feathery lines they’d grow, from brother’s lines you would learn, and in learning you would know: “Be sure you’re right then go ahead, Don’t mind what people say; You’ve got a row that you must hoe, So do it your own way.” Even then there were some folk who were envious for self-esteem, read a line, or two, right here, and you’ll see just what I mean: “It is vain in life’s wide sea, to ask of you to remember me, undoubtedly it is my lot, just to be known, and then, forgot.” An entry from older sister dear always made with life in mind, so while strict, it came sincere, with warm thoughts, loving kind: “Do not think of wrong or evil, You will find it if you do; As you measure for your neighbor He will measure back for you.” ‘Tis redundant to now say that times have changed that much, only that we type our poems somehow missing that special touch. ©KRJ 21 October 1999 ------------------ Sunshine Look, then, into thine heart, and write ~~~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow |

I was given an autograph book on my 10th birthday... and your poem reminds me so much of some of the entries... especially from my older relatives. Thanks for a great poem and a walk down memory lane! |

Very nice sunshine...I really enjoyed this. Might I make one small suggestion? In the line and within it holds some dreams ....what about something like and within it many a dream or enfolded in it many a dream not only would it change the flow of that line, but it would also make your rhyme a bit truer |
