Where do clowns go to laugh When the circus closes down Its wonders to the current town And canvas tents all lay in half? When lion, tiger and giraffe Are tucked away in steel cages As managers count up the wages To split among the circus staff - Where do clowns go to laugh? Where do the men behind the masks Of greasepaint eyes and lipstick grins That smile out over double chins And roll about whenever asked Go to let their cares unwind With someone else to play the fool While they sit perched upon a stool? Please tell me for my peace of mind For I was one who used to laugh And now I need that special place Where tears can dry without a trace, Where smiles can split your face in half; There - where the clowns go to laugh. |

This falls within that unusual category: a question I never thought to ask, but an answer I've always sought to find. Wondeful Job! The MimeThe eyes of the mime are cold and intense, A stare both vacant and proud; His look is sheathed in shades of diffidence, His semblance to enshroud. The lips of the mime are silent and dead, Unmoving, unmoved, unmet; The sound of his smile is left unsaid, The touch of his voice unspent. His face a mask, his demeanor a sham His words unspoken untruth, Yet the mute mime remains an epigram Of man's remembered youth The clowns, you see, exist for our progeny In the big tent of the circus; And if clowns exist for our progeny, Then mimes are for the rest of us. See not the unsmiling lips and icy eyes, And hear not the silence after. Look instead as the mime hypnotizes And listen to the laughter. Ron [This message has been edited by Ron (edited 06-13-99).] |

"...a question I never thought to ask, but an answer I've always sought to find." A masterful statement followed by an equally masterful poem. Thanks for sharing it. |

I like the poem. It is true where do we go when we lose our laughter, when the stress is too much. Can't wait to see more. |

a lovely poem, indeed.... reminds one of that old adage- laughing on the outside, crying on the inside- bravo, Balladeer -Christina ------------------ And I thought: this is how poetry is born. It comes from invisible heights, it is secret and dark in its origins, solitary and fragrant, and like the river it will assimilate whatever falls in its current; it will seek a route between the mountains, and its crystalline song will ripple through the meadows."- Pablo Neruda |

Great thought, I alway's just thought clowns were happy people, and that's why they became clowns to entertain people with their humor. Now you have me wondering if they could maybe be sad, and hiding behind those wigs and painted faces, so no one else will know. Great work Balladeer, you alway's get our thought waves moving. |

I always was told the happiest people had the most to hide...... Time flies? Say it not so, time stays we go. |

Wow, I've always appreciated your poetry and little stories with poetical rhymes. But the past awakens the best of times. I really like this verse of speech and of course one day, your level of writing I will reach. To be, or not to be. That is the question. |
