WISHES© Mar1998 Genea Parker Momma, let me have a penny to throw into the well. I need to make a wish. No – sorry- I can’t tell. Tiny fingers toss it in, she watches as it sinks. Closes big brown eyes tight, holds her breath, and thinks: “I wish for a new daddy. Dear God, I’ve been real good. And Momma isn’t as happy lately as I know she should.” A penny for a wish to make a dream come true. A wish to change a life. Lord, it’s up to You! Fifteen years ahead – her childhood is passing fast. Young girl finds happiness, she’s in love at last. They never saw the other car, her love might lose his life. The doctor’s words to her, cut through her heart like knives. Blindly she wanders the halls, not knowing what to say. Enters the chapel, clutching a penny and she begins to pray: “Don’t take him, Lord, I need him. Please do it another day.” A penny for a wish to make a dream come true. A wish to change a life. Lord, it’s up to You! Momma, let me have a penny to throw into the well. I need to make a wish. No – sorry- I can’t tell. Tiny fingers toss it in, she watches as it sinks. Closes big brown eyes tight, holds her breath, and thinks: “I hope Grandma’s in heaven. Dear God, she was so good. She used to wish with pennies too, and told me that I could.” ------------------ Thanks for taking the time to read. Comments welcome! :-) |

I think this could easily be one of my favorite poems. Very subtle (I like that you didn't mention whether the wishes ever come true), and yet very direct. There are so very many things in this life that leave us feeling powerless. And sometimes wishes are the only thing we have left. If we stop believing in the power of wishes, of dreams and prayers, we can all too easily be destroyed by the harshness of life. I think you've captured that Truth beautifully. Thank you for sharing your words and insight... Ron |

Ron, Thanks for ur kind words. To me, wishes are like prayers, they require a 'leap of faith' and the willingness to take it out of our hands. Each time i see a wishing well, i ponder the coins i see and the people who took that leap as they tossed. ~Genea |

Stunning, a wonderful piece. I loved how subtle it was in some ways, yet how powerful and strait forward in others. ------------------ *Krista Knutson* "It's a crazy thing, fate has perfect wings..."-Deanna Carter |

Even tho some people feel it is not right to "make a deal" with God, how many of us have NOT done so? Or, placed a prayer on a wish? Well done. ------------------ Sunshine Words will always express our feelings true. ~~~ KRJ Look, then, into thine heart, and write ~~~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow |
