When I was young and fancy free
I built a house of hay.
A big bad wolf came to my door
And stole my love away.

So then I built a house of sticks
With padlocks on the door.
A big bad wolf showed up again
And stole my love once more.

My problem, it appears to me,
Has been one of construction.
I need to build more carefully
To end this sad destruction.

So now I have a house of stone.
I'm smarter than before.
As long as I remain alone
No wolf comes to my door.

Oh, Boo! I wanted to see what you'd do
with a house of stone
I'd hope that the mortar'd be used
and here I find you, left alone!

Can I come over and play this little piggy goes to market?

It sounds as if you did it the wrong way round - now you would welcome the company of a wolf! It's a lovely poem, with a much deeper message than at first appears.

Sue is right my friend Balladeer tells simple tales, but sails a complicated ship.
To me he is an exceptional talent that I have the pleasure and honor of knowing.

I don't think the wolf stole your love! I think that little piggy went to market! She came home, found you'd moved and had to go on welfare to support herself. She now lives in a trailer in Nashville, struggling to be a country western singer....you must have heard of her! Shania Swine?

LOL@PDV! (that was classic!)

Balladeer, as always, you are amazing. The possibility of getting hurt vs. being alone...which is the better of the two evils...thoughts to ponder!

Balladeer, that is what you get for taking lady wolves as girlfriends ... LOL ... I heard what you said about your ex wife ...

An empty house is lonely
Though it stands the test of time ...
The wolf would find he'd Hell to pay
To steal a love of mine!

I can't believe that I never replied to such a powerful poem after all these years.  I still remember it though and consider it one of your best.  Sadly, I relate to this and must print it out for my book

Which should you be afraid of, being alone or the big bad wolf?

My first thought when I read the title was of the opera in world of warcraft...as we keep getting the big bad wolf..but no one wants to hear about that...:O

I did enjoy this very much.  And no one comes to my door now either.  I rest more easy.
