You’ll know that you’re in Kansas when tornadoes come to town and you’re out there with the video to record the sights and sounds… You’ll know that you’re in Kansas when you check the cows before the kids, your car broke down outside of town and the news got back before you did… You’ll know that you’re in Kansas when family vacations are taken at the State Fair when farmers are working late at night and church is where people really care… You’ll know that you’re in Kansas when Main Street is two blocks long and you never have to ask the words of the Jayhawk song… You’ll know that you’re in Kansas when the wind is at your back, your front, and your sides where there’s magic in the Land of Oz and riding tractors is more than just a ride… You’ll know that you’re in Kansas when you walk the unturned prairie grass when geese are in the autumn skies and the air is as clear as glass… You’ll know that you’re in Kansas when you see the summer sun set where prairie chicken are fine food and deer come close to you yet… You’ll know that you’re in Kansas when on a small hilltop rise and you can see the grain elevators fifteen miles away with your own eyes… You’ll know that you’re in Kansas when strangers wave at you and you’ll be glad that you are here among the chosen few. 10 Aug 99 ------------------ © KRJ Sunshine Words will always express our feelings true. ~~~ KRJ Look, then, into thine heart, and write ~~~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow |

How I long to walk again, along a country lane, To hear the song of meadowlark, its glorious refrain, To see the fields of golden wheat, as combines reap earth's yield, To smell the wildflower's fragrant scent, amid the unplowed field. Can we return from whence we came, to visit once again? Memories of a childhood past, my thoughts of lost somewhen, A moonlit walk on summer's eve, beneath God's firmament, All I have to do is dream, the memories remain, then back to Kansas sent. State Fair is approaching... [This message has been edited by Tim (edited 08-10-99).] |

Thanks, Tim, for adding your meaningful refrains, and to blueloon, who should read what Tim has added. Great state, hey? ------------------ © KRJ Sunshine Words will always express our feelings true. ~~~ KRJ Look, then, into thine heart, and write ~~~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow |

though i did not grow up in Kansas, but rather in Europe...this poem reminds me of my childhood spent in a little town...playing in the fields, daring the cows, digging for buried treasures, and all those fun things kids will dream up...thanks for the trip down memory lane, Sunshine |

Like elvira, I did not grow up in Kansas, but this brought forth some very fond memories of my childhood. What a wonderful piece! Thank you for posting this. ------------------ "Grief can take care of itself, but to get the full value of joy you must have somebody to divide it with." *Mark Twain* |

Thanks Elvira, Satiate and Delores, for your comments. I didn't think I would have so many replies. And Tim, I usually cheer for the winning team...I'm that much NOT into sports! But my step-daughter went to KU and is a practicing attorney in Hays...so there you have the saga, and much more than you probably ever wanted. ------------------ © KRJ Sunshine Words will always express our feelings true. ~~~ KRJ Look, then, into thine heart, and write ~~~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow [This message has been edited by Sunshine (edited 08-11-99).] |

Thanks to these two poems I almost feel I've been to Kansas - and certainly feel I would like to go some day. |

This is a wonderful poem. But is it so much about Kansas as about a way of life? Living in a big city, I thought all these things were gone...I'm very glad to hear they exist somewhere over the rainbow! Perhaps there's a subtle challenge here - we should all write about or home town/state! Great job Sunshine. |

Sue, you are welcome to Kansas at any time. Tim will host the party. PD, Kansas IS a way of life! Trust me! I'm a transplanted Californian, and would rather be here! I KNOW that's not the common thought...but again, you'll just have to trust me! ------------------ © KRJ Sunshine Words will always express our feelings true. ~~~ KRJ Look, then, into thine heart, and write ~~~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow |

Sunshine, You've succeeded in making me want to return to a place that I couldn't wait to leave. I kinda like my hills and pines, but a prairie grass song played by the instrument of the wind may indeed be a pleasant change for a while. ------------------ Dum spiro, spero JP |
