Withered Love

Delicate petals
on a stem of thorns,
tough and fragile both,
it withers in a vase beside her bed.
The colors have faded
like his kisses on her skin.
Yet, like his memory,
the fragrance lingers.
The phone beside her...
silent.
The light from the lamp
throws shadows
upon the book she holds.
The cover is tattered;
the pages worn.
Between the sheets of paper,
are pressed roses;
one for each lover she has taken;
one for each love she has lost.
Some are old ~
some new.
They lay in epitaph.
Colors of yellow, pink and red
faded to shades of brown.
Like the rose,
she is tough,
yet fragile.
As a tear glistens on her cheek,
she takes the flower from the vase;
presses it between the yellowed pages;
and closes another chapter in her life.

Hoot, this is excellent. The combinations of ideas you used and blended together were masterful. Well written.

Inclan, thank you for your kind words. We carry pressed memories of our entire lives, some in books, some in our minds and some pressed into our heart where they will remain forever.
