The Shadows Of The Night

Foolish men
in foolish costumes
talking carelessly
of starry-eyed women.
Running from the blazes
that surround them
they come to meet in
shadows of the night.

Foolish men
in foolish costumes
freely floating
beyond perception.
Running toward the blazes
that ruin lives
they depart
carelessly from
the shadows of night.

Foolish men
lacking foolish costumes
greet the morning
with a saddened haze.
Clearing cobwebs
from shrunken minds
they try and, focus
away from
the shadows of the night

Foolish men
facing foolish costumes
return again
to play the game.
Seeking the prize
of happiness
while constantly
fading farther into
the shadows of the night.

Very powerful. An ode to the fact that when they invented the electric lamp they still couldn't banish the shadows.

I do think I've been watching the evolution of a pretty darned good poet here...
