Winter Sunset - Chapter 1. It starts early, the new day, and it's dark out. Tingling Crisp. Chillingly Arctic. Strikingly Clear. Still dark enough to see the winter stars, even though the moon still casts a winter’s sun. The morning stars. The luminescent planets look, even to eyes in a middle-aged person's face, close enough to touch, to push one star into another star, and hear the twinkle of that pure, crystalline sound that all stars must make, if we just could touch them. As the sun rises late in the east, we prepare Ourselves accordingly, for checking on cattle is More than taking a ride to the country. It’s getting out, once there, releasing brutally chilling locks, sliding open stiff, ice covered gates, slipping on the freshly frozen, icy ground, the ground that seems like a fairy’s dream if we could take a moment to gaze, to watch the crystalline rainbows as the sun catches the hoarfrost and transforms them into minuscule rainbows. Don't breath in deep, it can hurt; but watch the frost come from your face. Day passes quickly and sunset eases over. And over. Quite chilled, as your bones know, one can watch from the crest of the swollen land, a small rise in an otherwise seemingly flat state; And it is quiet. Very quiet. Until a small, tentative breeze drifts up and moves what is left on the cottonwood, the dry leaves, still a few which are jostled about, brittle, scraping, almost sounding like a squirrel up and down the frozen bark, but not. To the east, the sky is purple, then lightens to a dark blue, then a middling blue, and on to a lighter hue, where blue meets pink, and salmon, and a touch of orange, meeting the last rim of yellow sun. Don’t blink. Ahh. You blinked, and blackness overcame us. [This message has been edited by Sunshine (edited 07-09-99).] [This message has been edited by Sunshine (edited 07-09-99).] |
