I think a Religion forum is needed. I mean, there are plenty of religion threads, so why not? Just a thought really. "Well I wish that you would cheat with someone, 'cause you're like diggin' holes in water and we know that can't be done." |

I wouldn't really call that a discussion forum though. Isn't it mostly for poetry? |

There is a forum for discussing Religion. It is called Philosophy 101. |

Yeah, I know all the religious discussions go there, obviously. All I'm saying is there are enough strictly religious discussions to form a whole new forum. It was just an idea really. |

It seems almost every thread in the Philosophy forum deteriorates (yes, that is the correct word) into religious posturing, mostly based on someone's read of one of the versions of the christian bible. The bible may be an interesting way to define one's life values, but it also is a set of old stories told too many times around the room. Changes have been suggested before, but they are viewed through the same bigoted narrowness of mind and dismissed as superfluous. Theology may at times overlap a part of philosophy, but is not all of philosophy, though I am sure this thread too can crumble now into a pile of qoutes from this bible verse or that and layered preaching positions based on "...it is so because god said it is so...." Your suggestion is a valid one. Too bad I misplaced the bible verse that would support it. |

Sounds like a reasonable suggestion. Spirituality and Philosophy are NOT synonyms for Religion, and most definitely are NOT dependent upon any one organized religion. Yet I find it difficult to enter into ANY discussions in either forum which don't somehow become a debate of biblical proportions surrounding interpretations of that one ancient text and perhaps...one or two others. Again, it seems to be a reasonable suggestion, irregardless of the other forums. [This message has been edited by Midnitesun (08-26-2007 11:54 AM).] |

What is wrong with religious and biblical arguments taking place in Philosophy? In no way must you participate in any such lines of discussion if you don't wish to. But the reason that such religious discussions come about is because they are inevitabley part of almost any very important philosophical topic you may bring. Trying to remove Religion from Philosophy is like trying to remove a colour of the rainbow from the rainbow. It is likely impossible, but even if it were possible it shall only make the rainbow less colourful. |

"What is wrong with religious and biblical arguments taking place in Philosophy? " They become tedious, redundant and exclusionary (and often monumentally boring) but the question itself illustrates a part of the problem; the arguments rarely are broadly referenced religious and/or biblical arguments - they most often take the form of narrow didactic christian pedantries. "In no way must you participate in any such lines of discussion if you don't wish to. " No kidding; I wonder if that is why my time spent in discussion forums has dwindled from first encounter to almost nothing? "But the reason that such religious discussions come about is because they are inevitabley part of almost any very important philosophical topic you may bring." This statement clearly is based on hubris, is incorrect, and warrants little response. "Trying to remove Religion from Philosophy is like trying to remove a colour of the rainbow from the rainbow. It is likely impossible, but even if it were possible it shall only make the rainbow less colourful." You are clutching a handful of similarly sized and colored pebbles from a broad beach strewn with pebbles of every imaginable size, color and shade. You waive them in everyone's face insisting that they are the answer to everyone's questions or needs, that they must be recognized as the most important pebbles for everyone, and yet they are insignificant when compared to the diversity of other shapes, colors and shades available on the beach. I offer only a different metaphor, the observation that there is much more to the elephant than the blind man could tell by touch. |

Then help direct the blind man to those parts of the elephant he is missing, instead of trying to remove or seperate the parts that he is not. I think the elephant shall appreciate it a lot more too |
