This may have been covered at some point where I wasn't paying attention. How much hassle would it be to have a counter that shows how much a poem has been read? Are we well beyond such a thing at this late date?

The goofballs at thestarlitecafe.com have them. Sometimes political, perhaps philosophical, mature or even simply sensitive posts are not largely commented on but, I suspect, well read.

Sure it's an ego driven question but if someone put the effort and time into something they felt was important to them and received few (never none, such a civil site we are) comments they have no way of knowing their efforts simply didn't vanish into cyber-space (along with perhaps a bit of the author).

And while I have the wizard's (I assume) ear, is there any way that the administration knows how many of the daily clicks to this spot are from folks other than its members?

I see the very impressive numbers one can easily obtain on the little rainbow square at the bottom of the page;

VISITS

   Total 73,063,299
   Average Per Day 69,233
   Average Visit Length 0:51
   Last Hour 9,790
   Today 98,114
   This Week 484,632

  PAGE VIEWS

   Total 324,402,837
   Average Per Day 213,061
   Average Per Visit 3.1
   Last Hour 18,992
   Today 243,890
   This Week 1,491,429

Very impressive. But I know in my own more obsessive phases (current) I might jump here a dozen times or more in a day.

I'd imagine the outside views are tremendous since I looked at the photo-profiles (haven't in a while before yesterday) and see many folks have assumed additional identities which suggests we have a phenomenal amount of visitors. Kinda pumps a guy up doesn't it?

It's been discussed a few times in the past, Richard, usually to mixed reviews. There's a lot of writers who really don't want to know.

The new software, when it's finally ready, will make the information available, but in a non-intrusive way. Instead of displaying the access numbers in the forum listings, as is common with some software packages today, each poem will have a "Statistics" link available from within the thread. It will include the number of reads, as well as the number of times someone has emailed the poem to a friend or created a greeting card. I think a lot of people are going to be VERY surprised.

The numbers from our rainbow counter are a bit inflated right now, and will grow progressively more so over the next two weeks. In December, our non-inflated visitor count was 1,692,204 uniques (a unique visit discounts the many who return multiple times per day), a number that is certainly respectable enough. Indeed, the last time I had access to such statistics, we were among the top 5,000 most visited sites on the Internet through most of the year.

Yesterday, however, marked the beginning of a very non-typical period for us. That respectable visitor count for December will probably be equaled and possibly be doubled in just the WEEK leading up to Valentine's Day, and the numbers you cited for yesterday's visitor count will be matched or exceeded every HOUR during our peaks on Feb. 13 and 14.

I don't usually get a whole lot of sleep in February.

I'm sure he finds time.  Being an overachiever though, I'm sure he falls asleep counting snowflacks.  Counting sheep is so blaise.
