When I say I enjoyed a poem |

must I substantiate my sincere reply with hordes of smilies? I'm curious as to why so many animated critters are used when words, our words, are what a poetry site is, and should, be about. There seems to be some sort of smilie competition going on, yes? |

I don't think it's a competition, but just a lightening up one's words. I really see no harm in it, as they sometimes tell us how the replier feels. And as this is Christmastime, I personally enjoy the little Christmassmilies and trees. But one doen't have to use them of course, one's answer will not be considered any less without them. Sometimes I use them, sometimes I don't Titia A rose is a rose is a rose...I guess... |

What many fail to realize, I think, is that using "hoards" of graphics, or using very large graphics loading from very slow sites, can make our home very inhospitable to people on slow Internet connections or with less than ultra-modern computers. The smilies and graphics exist because they can, indeed, lighten and enhance. But more isn't necessarily better. I see posts with ten, fifteen, even twenty smilies, or I see posts with the same exact smilie repeated over and over, all in a row. Those slow down every computer, and can too easily crash older ones. Restraint is NOT a four-letter word, my friends… |

I'm not against the animation and critters per say but in most cases one or two of them can make the repliers point. Thanks for your thoughts, Ron. |

It's unfortunate that the same people do this 'overload of graphics' because the members with slower connections probably avoid opening that thread. It's too bad, they are trying to make a 'presentation' and some members never get to see it! |

It's just a way of expressing a feeling, but some restraint should be used. I like to use gifs or art with poetry. I am not much of a poet, but pictures often invite me to write. I suppose I need visual inspiration. I was not aware of some of the things Ron pointed out, so I'll take note of that for future use. Deb |

"Restraint is NOT a four-letter word, my friends… " I should write that down five hundred times. Or do you think that too much? (I swear Ron, I don't know WHAT is the matter with me!) But okay, to stick to topic...emoticons (smilies) can often let a person know the intent of text. So I enjoy using them, and though I enjoy the beautifully presented graphics, I too become frustrated when my pc slows to a crawl when all I really wanted to do was read a poem. I used to just type *smile* or *wink* but the smilies are fun, but omigod, I have to agree with Ron about moderation....(HUH?) Yep, I, the immoderate, have seen the error of my ways....for now. Perhaps I am just inconsistent? (serenity exits, pondering the subtlety of subtleties, and further pondering if she has even spelled that correctly...) HMMMMMM..... |

I'm using quite a lot of pics with my poetry, but I always try to rezise them to about 11 to 16kb, that way they won't take up too much space (I hope). I do love so very much writing to pics. About the smilies? Sometimes one is stronger then a whole load of them. Titia A rose is a rose is a rose...I guess... |

I didn't realize this about images slowing down a computer, guess I should have. So I'm glad I read this. Kathleen (Kay) |

I have often wondered how much better a poem could be if the picture were described within the text of the work instead of presented? This may be the wrong forum for this as a challenge, but would love to read many of the poems I have "seen"....as I told one friend...re-write this? as if you thought me blind...???? ho...ho....ho? |

Ahhhhh, now you're getting the picture. *s Isn't a poet's goal to create pictures with words? Something I need a lot of work on but all the fun (and frustration) is in the trying. *s |

Well ... give a kid a box of toys ... and they're gonna play with 'em ! Personally I LIKE the smilies, the graphics, the music~ I don't know about slow-loading computers, because I don't have one~ But a little brightening with a smile or two - or three - or four - or more doesn't affect my enjoyment of a poem or a reply~ I think it's more about personal taste than anything else~ My taste buds crave the little 'happies' on the page~ I understand and appreciate moderation ... shucks, I even like the MODS ! (HAD to throw in at least ONE) .. now that didn't hurt, did it ? Chansondegeste~ Not making light of your inquiry ... "must I substantiate my sincere reply with hordes of smilies?" A reply should ALWAYS be sincere ... some folks just substantiate their sincerity with smilies~ It is not a 'must'~ I think of our words as the main course - and any added emoticon or graphic as dessert~ Loving this buffet~ ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ |

Marge, I value everyone's opinions. Thank you for yours. Please notice in my original post where I say nothing about being upset with a/one smilie, not even a couple. One or two does not a horde make. *s Wishing you a wonderful Holiday season. As a smilie junkie.. I have to say that the smilies are just fun I use words to let them know how much I liked their poetry, the smilies are just a fun way to reinforce my words. Tara "My heart is like an open book, for the whole world to read" |

Its not really a competition I must say, but it is a fun think some people like to do. And yes I can see if there are too many images to slow the computer down, but if not I don't see too much harm in it Randy Meador a life lived unexplored is a life not worth living. |
