GHOSTS I’ve been known to be afraid of ghosts even though I don’t believe in bogeymen and unseen hosts Good sense at times takes leave I can conjur up an army to fight a mock battle against their force; but when daylight dissolves the feral night they return thence to their source I can’t believe they live inside me For I didn’t give them permission to set up their domicile here they paid their own admission They come and go as they please they’re wary of my waking they taunt, bray and often tease Their playground’s of my making Perhaps we all have spectres lying in wait, they hide they live on what-ifs and maybes; they find sustenance inside If we pause to gain translation for the quiet voices we hear We learn of how they’re born and grow These progeny of fear I know that we’ve all given them shelter but I’ll plead for their eviction and banish them to caves of memory I’ll pledge this as conviction How good are we at conquering that which we’re loathe to face? and how can we approach the battleground if we cannot find the place? I won’t believe in phantoms: I can’t know of things unseen my approach to their shadowed dimension leaves me hanging in between between waking and sleeping moments between the sighted and the blind between knowing and not knowing how I might best their kind Should someone come along looking for them I’ve pushed them out the door look elsewhere if you want to find them; they don’t live here anymore – August 1999 |

Thank you for your encouragement and words of praise for my writing. I've been writing for a long time, but haven't shown any of my work to anyone save a couple of close friends. I am so buoyed up by the kind words I've received thus far and I am thoroughly enjoying the other poet's work that I'm reading here too.
