They found a young mans body
in a lake in my home town.
He had an epileptic seizure
fell off his bike and quickly drowned.

If I told you this was my brother
what then would you say?
That for 17 years of my life
I didn’t know him anyway.

Do you think it makes a difference
whether I knew this man or not?
Would it change that we were siblings
or the parents that we’ve got?

Should I grieve the loss of family?
Of a branch of family tree?
Should it really make a difference
he was only half blood to me?

Well I say yes it matters
and I’m sorry he had to go.
And a stranger loved him also
though he will never know.

I have some other siblings
though they are only half.
Their parents married 42 years
I’m 29 you do the math.

So I stand among the shadows
keeping track of what they do.
My mother made sure to tell me
I had siblings, do you know too?

I doubt he ever told you
about the child he helped make.
And I will keep his secret
not for him, but for your sake.

Its not like I’d come to dinner
or spend holidays with you.
Just want you to know besides your family
that a stranger loves you too.
