The Chimes

On the event of our tenth anniversary, in trust,
a gift of sound and time was given to us,
one that ticks toward and from the here and now
with chimes that beseech a courtly bow.

The grandfather clock of ancestral time
brings forth birth, death, and allows ties to bind
with its deep, rich bell tolling, marking signs
of passage gone fast, with the past intertwined.

The heavy pendulum swings east and west
the weights hang heavy, an ever falling quest
hung back by chains moving quiet and slow
holding history as if in a resonant glow.

The comfort of sound of the chimes as they toll,
bringing together time, making it whole,
from one’s very moment, then to the next
keeping life at it’s best, most ebulliently complex.

‘Tis easy enough to get lost in the chimes
taking me far far back into lost time
when life was slower, not so fast paced
and one didn’t engage in a virtual race.

For when the bonging sounds enter my ear,
traces of Lancelot and Camelot’s time come near
and I swear Merlin’s sorcery is working its best
and the chimes make me feel so very at rest.

For I would have been Guinevere the queen,
holding forth in Arthur’s court, and then, serene,
the chimes bring me back to the future, my time;
and it’s with reverence that I love the sound of the chimes.

Sunshine,
The chimes of your times
Is not of mine
But the wine of thine.
May it ever chime so.

I don't want to be a wet blanket, but Maid Marian was Robin Hood's girlfriend, not King Arthur's.
Not that it matters in the least, I really enjoyed the poem.

Don't worry, Sunshine. Rumor has it she used to sneak over to Arthur's on Friday nights. At least, he talked about having it maid in the shade!

Your poem is excellent.

No Hoot, I posted this on the date recorded...but you may have read it earlier and just didn't have a chance to respond. However, if my poems are starting to sound the same, I may need to see a shrink!
