BROTHER CAIN

Brother Cain, where does thou hide,
Am I to die in thy shadows?
I am slain, death by my bride,
Please tell me why ‘fore thy goes.

I heed your blow, passed in vain,
Mother, attuned, ever to weep.
I bleed but know not your pain,
My brother - your wound must run deep.

Darkness creeps across my vision,
In your waste of humanity.
Canst thou sleep with your decision?
Does thou taste the blood of me?

Leave me dead, silenced forever,
Now, but the haunt of memory.
In thy head, O' will I ever,
Abel, be the taunt of thee.

Live an outcast, in thy shame,
I will ever be the sleeper.
‘Til sleeps at last thy branded name,
I Will be my brother's keeper.

Wow, Michael....all I can say is wow....superbly written, and I'm sure "he" will be grateful and in awe at what you've written here.....I'm not sure about the mood you wanted to portray...I sensed love, anguish, solitude, sadness...on and on.

I appreciated this poem Michael.. I feel that I read the right message, tell me if I am wrong. But do you not speak of the Cain banished to Nod? I found you poem to be interesting.. I am not sure that everyone knows the story. It was very good..

Makes me sad reading this. If this is indeed the Cain banished after slewing his brother, then I had no choice but to imagine how Abel felt while reading this, because Abel didn't seem to know the covetousness which bore a seed in Cain's blood.

I loved this one, as I love all your poems. You know well enough how deep your writings impact others, so I will refrain from saying the same here for me, except it's true.

Indeed, Lucie, you are right.
When asked where his brother was by God, Cain responded "Am I my brother's keeper?"
God heard Abel's blood crying from the earth and cursed Cain and banished him to Nod, (A land east of Eden).

This poem was meant to reflect how Cain in killing his brother (presumed over jealousy) would never rise above his slain brother's memory, living in shame, banished by God. Abel, in essence, becomes the keeper of Cain for all his remaining days.

Artur, thank you for the kind words. Indeed, I was trying to convey the pain and confusion of Abel in this scenario.

Would that be who Cain took for a wife?

I've heard many stories of who she was, where she came from - the cause of much controvery it seems.
