Love Wasn’t Enough ©1998 by Genea Parker

She was the first one to know
I was the next woman you’d leave.
I never even considered
This would ever happen to me.

Where did you meet her?
And how long has it been?
Oh, don’t repeat the story
I don’t want to hear it again.

I thought I was the one
You were always thinking of
I was so wrong,
Love wasn’t enough.

The first shall be last
It was written long ago
The one who loves best
Is often the last to know.

You told me I was the first
Woman you really loved.
I didn’t know I’d be the last
To find out – love wasn’t enough.

She’s known all along
One day we’d be through
While I thought forever
Was meant for me and you.

I thought I was the one
You were always thinking of
I was so wrong,
Love wasn’t enough.

Amber,
I am glad i touched you with this work. I think we can learn from the painful memories as we look back at them. And yes, i have found mine too. :-)

Good job, Genea. Glad to know this is but a memory. Without life and everything that comes with it, we'd be a dull bunch of poets, well, except, of course, for certain folk out there who like fruit, and sheep.

Genea,
You can't have sunshine without darkness.
And you can't have darkness without sunshine.
Does that make sense? Nice poem.

Sunshine,
Yes, sometimes those memories creep back in and just BEG to be put into words, dont they? Makes us interesting and unique and yet sometimes we find a kindred spirit in our memories.

Seymour,
Yes it makes perfect sense!

Thanks to both for taking time to read.
