This poem /pip/Forum79/HTML/003464.html shows up in a search of Suthern's work, as a poem called Independence, which she posted and then withdrew. |

When a poem is withdrawn, or deleted, Ed, the space it created is taken up by the next poster. |

The index files used for searching pipTalk are monstrously huge and growing larger pretty much every minute of every day. Post a new poem or comment and two seconds later you can search for and find it in Smart Search. The only thing that makes that possible is that new posts are added to the END of the search index. It's like going to a long row of dominoes and adding a new tile at the end of the row. When a thread is moved or deleted, however, as happened with Ruth's, it presents a technical challenge. We have to go inside our domino chain to pluck up an existing tile and then move EVERY tile after that removed tile to fill in the little hole we left in the chain. On average, it would take 12 minutes of intense disk reads/writes to dynamically update our search indexes when a thread is moved or deleted. So - we don't do it. That means that a moved or deleted thread is still in the search indexes even though the poem may no longer reside at the old address listed there. About once every week or two, while most people are sleeping, I shut down the Search features and ask our server to read and index every one of our 150,000 threads to rebuild a new search index from scratch. That process now takes over thirty minutes, but at the end of the run, all those little holes are plugged and filled. In short, the "tweaked link" will only be there a short while longer, Ed. |

And meanwhile, those few who fuss that I don't post can see that I do... even if I don't always leave it around! LOL Sorry to be a bother... I always was good at messing up someone's dominoes... *G* |
