There's probably a very simple solution to my dilemna, but I just can't seem to figure it out. My parents were just given a computer, by a friend of theirs, and I've been getting everything set up for them. Well, it would appear that the former owner adjusted some settings somewhere, because when I click on a link that is set to open in a new window, it doesn't respond. It's not just on one site. It's everywhere. I am unable to open many of the links that people post in these forums, and I haven't been able to download McAfee Clinic for them, because it isn't responding to those links either. I've tried everything that I could think of, including adjusting the security settings, but nothing has worked. So...I NEED HELP! Again, the problem is only with links that are set to open in a new window. The links that open in the same window are responding as they should. Anyone have any suggestions on what to try? if i don't miss my guess, you may want to go into the browser's settings (under Tools - Internet Options for Internet Explorer, i don't know where for Netscape or others) and find a place in there that allows or disallows Javascript which is often used to open new windows. |

uhm - since i wasn't smart enough to mention this part - when you find it, make sure it's checked to be allowed. some people prefer to turn off the functionality of Javascript, since it is one of the biggest culprits in the whole multiple pop-up game. turning it off limits that, uhm, but also limits other things. it's a matter of what one prefers. |

The browser is Internet Explorer. Christopher...I had actually thought of that as a possibility, but hadn't tried it yet, since I know very little about Javascript. However, since you suggested it, I gave it a shot. I enabled everything I could find that referred to Javascript, but still nothing. So...I'm currently downloading an Internet Explorer update, to see if that will correct the problem. Thanks for your input, though. I really appreciate it. If you have any other suggestions, please do share. |

Okay...I found the culprit. Problem solved! They have a program on here called 'History Kill'. It's intended to 'cover your tracks', so to speak. As soon as you close your browser windows, it cleans out all the temporary internet files, and such things as that. It, apparently, also has the ability to stop pop-ups. When you mentioned pop-ups, Christopher, it reminded me that I had heard someone mentioning that about the program, so I checked out the program options, and sure enough, it was set to not allow new windows to open. Not anymore, though! So, thanks for mentioning the pop-ups and triggering my memory Christopher. You're my hero! |

Now if we could just find a solution for getting rid of all those obnoxious pop-ups... |

Mike, I think you have exaggerated your point. That surely could not preface the end of civilization. But I have to agree that it could well be a turning point. Pete |
